MOUNTAIN BIKING TOUR
Group size: 2-9 people, 14 days/13 nights, May to late September
For serious mountain bikers: wide open landscapes, breathtaking vistas!
The foothills of the Altai Mountains in Western Mongolia, with their wide open landscape, breathtaking vistas of the snow capped high peaks, dry weather with pleasant, moderate temperatures during the late spring and summer months, are an ideal terrain for serious mountain bikers!
We will bike about 55 km to 75km per day, depending upon the terrain. We'll sleep in our own tent camps. The tour will be guided by local professionals who not only know the terrain, but are skilled mountain bikers, mechanics as well as gracious hosts.
Itinerary Day by Day: 14 day tour
Day 1 You will be met at Ulaanbataar airport by one of our representatives , and, after checking in at your hotel, we will take you on a sightseeing tour of the city and a welcome dinner. ( Hotel/D)
Day 2 Accompanied by your guide, take a 3 hour flight to Ulaangom, the capital of Uvs province. This province features a spectacular combination of desert, snow capped peaks and alpine lakes. It is home to a number of ethnic tribes of Durved, Bayad, Kazakh and Hoton. The largest Mongolian lake of Uvs is located here, covering a territory of 3350 sq. km. Upon landing in Ulaangom meet with the team of drivers and cooks and transfer to Boodog Pass, the starting point of cycling. (2 hours). Upon reaching the Boodog Pass, you will view the 3965m high glaciated peak of the White Heron Mountains. Here we set up a tented camp, and cooks will serve your first dinner in the wild. This evening the bike mechanic will help you assemble and prepare the bikes. (Tent/B,L,D)
Day 3 Acclimatization bike to Uureg Lake. (Tent/B,L,D) 55km
Day 4 Bike to Achit Lake. (Tent/B,L,D) 65km
Day 5 Bike to Blue Lake. (Tent/B,L,D) 75km
Day 6 Bike to Sogoot Mountain. (Tent/B,L,D) 65km
Day 7 Bike to Hoilgiin River, visit a rock carving grotto. (Tent/B,L,D) 75km
Day 8 Bike to White River, view Tavan Bogd Peaks and glaciers. (Tent/B,L,D) 65km
Day 9 Rest day. A deserved rest day. Lazy morning. In the afternoon visit a Tuvan family house. The hospitality of the locals is unparalleled. Learn about their life and traditions, as well as sample their food. A sip of milk vodka is an essential part of the hospitality ceremony. Back in the camp you will be served one of delicacies of the Kazak cuisine - "besbarmak". Literally meaning "five fingers", this is a delicious assortment of stewed meat, vegetables and flour, eaten with hands. (Tent/B,L,D)
Day 10 Bike to Sogoot River Valley, traditional summer camp of Kazakh tribesmen. (Tent/B,L,D) 80km
Day 11 Load bikes and drive (3 hours) to the town of Ulgii. Today you can sleep. We sleep in Kazakh Ger or in our own Guesthouse, both fully equipped with showers and bathrooms. Meals will be served by the local restaurant. In the afternoon take an optional visit to the town. A museum of Kazakh traditions, local bazaar and Mosque are the main attractions. (Guesthouse or Ger/B,L,D)
Day 12 Return flight to Ulaanbaatar. Free afternoon. Say goodbye to your support team and take a 3 hour flight to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel. After hot showers and some rest we all gather for a farewell dinner. (Hotel/B,D)
Day 13 Free day in Ulaanbaatar. A free day for shopping and self-exploration around the city. You may defer to recommendations of our team in order to make most out of your day. (Hotel/B)
Day 14 Departure transfer. You will be transferred to the airport for your journey home.
